Maggie Cruz is an award-winning, Cuban-American Designer, based out of Miami, Florida. Maggie is known for her breathtaking projects in exclusive South Florida neighborhoods where she has a prominent following by families and professionals looking for a luxury residence that delivers on both sophistication, and functionality.

ROCA is one of the go-to tile companies that Maggie seeks to for inspiration, so we invited her to sit down with us in our showroom to discuss her contribution to the design world. She even shares with us some trends that she is excited to see in the interior design circles.

What is your design process?

For me, the design process really begins with the client and understanding their needs and their lifestyle.

What inspires your designs?

When I’m creating a project I think I’m pulling together an overall look and feel. I’m doing that by using different materials to help me interpret other looks. We tend to work on projects that are a little bit more laid back, we have a lot of family homes.

All those things have to come into play with all the different materials that we are going to select. It has to work for the client, it has to work for the project and has to work with the overall aesthetic goals that we are trying to achieve.

What’s special about your designs?

Our look is definitely easy-going, fresh, livable, yet luxurious at the same time. So we have to take into consideration the lifestyle of the client, how they’re going to use this space, what they want the space to do for them, how they want it to work, maintain it. All those things have to come into play with all the different materials that we are going to select. So it’s not like we just pick up a beautiful tile and you know, because we like it, there’s really a lot of thought that goes into everything that we do and at the end, it has to work for the client, it has to work for the project and has to work with the overall aesthetic goals that we are trying to achieve.

How did you discover ROCA?

I found out about ROCA through our local representative, that she came to our office and she introduced us to the line and we immediately fell in love with it, just because of the amount of product that was available and the different styles that were offered. Also working with her is amazing because she makes our lives very easy. She’s available, she gives us pricing right away.

The blues are always colors that we are drawn to, they are easy to live with and work well with the Florida aesthetic that we typically use.

What are some of your favorite ROCA collections?

Some of my favorite collections from ROCA right now are the handcrafted tiles that you have from Maiolica. They work very well, blended with contemporary elements, they definitely make space feel a little bit more relaxed, so you can pair it well with the downtown collection, which is a more classic porcelain tile, it comes in various gray tones. It’s a great way to ground space in a contemporary element but then you add the hand made tiles that actually gives it a more interesting look, it’s less severe, works well without clients because it’s more casual and laid back and it comes in beautiful colors. The blues are always colors that we are drawn to, they are easy to live with and work well with the Florida aesthetic that we typically use.

What is the most exciting part of the design process for you?

The most exciting part for us, for the whole design process, is the unfolding and seeing our clients’ reactions.

What are some of the trends that are bubbling up in the industry in 2020?

I think some of the trends that people should be really looking for right now is blending into the contemporary with the old world, which gives you a sense of nostalgia.
